Should I Buy an Electric Car?

Dear car lovers, this time we have prepared this comprehensive guide with top reasons as to why should you buy an electric car. Surely, there is a lot of buzz around EVs and it is worth it to weigh in each reason behind decision to buy an EV.

Safety

EVs must go through the same rigorous safety assessment and meet the same safety standards that conventional cars sold in the United States have to undergo. Plus, there are EV-specific standards for reducing chemical spillage from batteries, securing batteries during a crash, and isolating the vehicle’s chassis from the high-voltage system.

Actually, many EVs score better than conventional vehicles in car crash tests. For example, Tesla Model X landed a perfect score. Ultimately, as EVs tend to have a lower center of gravity than conventional cars, they are less likely to roll over in a car accident and thus are safer from that standpoint.

In reality, EVs are far less likely to catch fire than gas vehicles. According to Tesla:

“There are 150,000 car fires per year according to the National Fire Protection Association, and Americans drive about 3 trillion miles per year according to the Department of Transportation. That equates to 1 vehicle fire for every 20 million miles driven, compared to 1 fire in over 100 million miles for Tesla.”

One particular safety concern that is specific to EVs is their silent operation. Pedestrians may be less likely to hear an EV than a conventional car in an exact same situation. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking for a solution to this problem and so, the Agency requires from EVs to emit audible signals at low speeds.

Low maintenance

If you buy an electric car, you will save money on maintenance costs. EVs have no gasoline engine and so they do not require oil changes, spark plugs and timing belts replacement. Unlike gasoline motors, electric motors do not need a routine maintenance checks. Electric cars distinguish with a simple design by default, so say goodbye to long servicing checks and the hefty fees.

The reduced maintenance costs are said to save an EV owner over $1,500, compared to a likewise gasoline-powered car.

Like the engines in conventional car, batteries in EVs are designed for very long life. However, eventually they will wear out. Nowadays, most EV manufacturers would offer a warranty for 8 years, or 100,000 miles. Nissan are also offering additional battery loss coverage for 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Bye oil!

Using oil is related to vast environmental and health problems and electric vehicles can cut the oil use by half in just twenty years. Plus, transportation is still depending on oil as a primary energy source. Electric cars can disrupt the status quo and offer a cleaner way to fuel transportation. Overall, electric vehicles can cut US oil use by 1.5 million barrels a day by 2035. (Source: Union of Concerned Scientists)

Next, no matter where you live, electric vehicles are cheaper to fuel than their gasoline-powered counterparts. Electricity providers in the largest US cities offer a plan that makes using electricity cheaper than gasoline.

Even with gas prices being relatively affordable, it is still cheaper to run an electric car. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency states that the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, will cost an owner $500 a year to run for 15,000 miles, based on average power rates. Furthermore, EPA estimates that an Ioniq Electric owner will spend some $4,250 less in fuel costs over a five-year period than will someone driving an average vehicle for the same distance.

Good for the environment

Even though the electricity used to fuel an EV comes from the coal-dominated grid, EVs still produce less pollution than their conventional counterparts. Moreover, the emissions performance of EVs is set to only improve as wind and solar power are slowly replacing coal.

If you buy an electric car, you can install solar panels on your rooftop and conveniently charge your EV without boosting your electricity bill. In fact, when powered by renewable energy, an EV can operate nearly emission-free.

Key points

  • Less air pollution: If you buy an EV, you are helping to reduce harmful air pollution from exhaust emissions. EVs have zero exhaust emissions.
  • Renewable energy: If you use renewable energy to recharge your EV, you can reduce your greenhouse gas emissions even more.
  • Eco-friendly materials: EV manufacturers turn to more eco-friendly production policies and materials. The Ford Focus Electric is made up of recycled materials and the padding is made out of bio materials. The Nissan Leaf’s interior is partly made out of materials such as recycled water bottles, plastic bags, and even old car parts.
  • Improved health and well-being: Better air quality will lead to less health issues caused by air pollution and reduced healthcare costs respectively. EVs operate much quieter than conventional vehicles. This mean which means less noise pollution in big metro areas.

Driving experience

EVs such as Tesla provide unparalleled comfort for drivers and passengers. Despite the heavy batteries, electric cars conduct well, because of their low center of gravity and the lack of heavy engine located above the front axle. EVs deliver instant torque and provide responsive acceleration. They are both smooth and quiet when underway. The driving experience is quite different from a traditional car, as EVs feel more like they simply glide.

EVs are very convenient as depending on where you live, you will find charging stations in public parking lots at airports, commercial buildings and hospitals, in many retailers’ and malls’ parking area. The 240-volt Level 2 chargers can fully restore an EV battery in approximately four hours, depending on the particular model. And, a Level 3 DC Fast Charger can restore your car’s battery to 80% of its capacity in 30 minutes.

Furthermore, you can charge your EV’s battery from your own home, while you spend time with your friends and family. And so, you can focus on the important people in your life, spend more time on the activities and hobbies that you love.

Buy an electric car online and have it delivered to you

Once you choose the best EV, as now there are plenty of models to choose from, you need a reliable auto transporter to ship your car to your home. Not all car shipping companies are the same and some are specialized to only ship vehicles locally. TCI Logistics can safely and easily transport your dream car to any location nationwide.

Now that that we need to be conscious about our environment more than ever, it makes sense to buy an EV and start reducing the negative impacts from air pollution. Plus, as technology advance, those electric cars will become even safer. Tesla is committed to constantly update your car software to improve security. It’s clean, it’s safe and it’s good for the environment. Should we say that it is the car of the future?
